How long does ceramic paint protection last?

Ceramic coating bonds to your car's paint to create a harder, slicker surface than wax alone. Dirt and water release more easily, washing takes less effort, and the finish holds its gloss longer.

How long it lasts is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on more than the product.

What actually determines the lifespan

The product itself

Coatings vary enormously. Consumer products sold off a shelf and professional coatings applied to prepared paint are not the same thing and do not behave the same way over time. We will tell you what we are putting on your car and what it is rated to do.

The Queensland climate

This one matters more here than most places. Sustained UV, summer humidity and salt air along the coast are all harder on a finish than a temperate inland climate. A car parked at Mermaid Beach lives a tougher life than the same car in a garage in Nerang.

Where the car is kept

Garaged or under cover makes a genuine difference. So does parking under trees, where sap and bird droppings sit on the surface and etch into it if they are left.

How it is washed

This is the factor most within your control, and the one that ends coatings early. Automatic car washes with brushes put swirl marks straight back into the surface you paid to protect. Harsh degreasing detergents strip it. A regular two bucket hand wash with a pH neutral shampoo is what keeps a coating performing.

So what should you expect?

Rather than quote you a number that may not apply to your car, we will tell you what the specific coating we are recommending is rated for, and what that realistically means given where your car lives and how it gets washed.

Be careful with anyone promising a fixed lifespan without asking those questions first. The product is only one part of the answer.

Getting the most out of it

Wash regularly rather than waiting until the car is filthy, use a pH neutral shampoo and two buckets, dry with a clean microfibre, and get bird droppings and sap off promptly rather than letting them sit. A coating makes all of that easier. It does not make it unnecessary.
